I think this normalized behavior has emboldened people to treat everyone this way, regardless of gender. The “I feel I have some modicum of power of you, so I’m going to be an asshole, because I won’t have to pay the piper.”
But, truly, women and minorities have absolutely borne the brunt of the worst of it. I keep thinking to myself that 1984 and The Handmaid’s Tale were not supposed to be read as instruction manuals for oppression.
